May 20th, 2011 / Posted by natashaWhat do you like about Fashion, Evelyn?
“… it’s pretty.”
Who could say no to a Fashion-loving seven year old who asked to sit in on a class for her school project? Here’s little Evelyn Rees in Peggy’s Fashion Awareness class, watching intently and diligently taking notes on early 60′s fashion for her school report.
Evelyn’s favourite part of the class? Peggy’s legendary show and tell where we oohed and aahed while Fashion Merchandising students Leanna, Erica, Vivien and Tia paraded around the room in select decade pieces from Peggy’s amazing collection. And after the slideshow presentation on 60′s fashion (a real blast from the past), which included photos of Peggy wearing the same outfits from show and tell, it’s no surprise that Evelyn officially declared Peggy to be her new Fashion muse!!
Evelyn’s fave outfit: “Love the black and white Dress.”

Too adorable. We gotta keep our eyes on her. Could she be the next Tavi in the making?

Wrapping Up Robson
May 6th, 2011 / Posted by natashaMy, how things have changed. Just a few months ago, we were ramping up to do our anticipated renovations of our Uptown City Square Campus and lo and behold, like the law of attraction, some gifts came in really BIG packages. Who would’ve thought that we would be taking over our own Robson block? The Blanche Macdonald Block. Now, that sure does have a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
Right beside our Downtown Robson Campus, we’ve landed the deal of the century or dare we say, millennium? Blanche Macdonald has started the build-out of our third campus, Atelier, including our first ever student-operated Hair Salon – Q & A, and our own beauty boutique – CurliQue. Racking up over 25,000 square feet with a huge retail presence on the ground floor, flagship corner space and the entire second floor, watch for the launch in the late summer, early fall!
Already, the celebrity line up of brands has left us breathless.
Outside of Sephora, the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey)-owned brand Make Up For Ever is being reintroduced to Blanche Macdonald, not only as part of our Student Makeup kits but also as a major presence in our store. Did you know that one of the first cult makeup lines, Kevyn Aucoin, has gotten a little brush up with the stellar Jeanine Lobell, founder of Stila and Celebrity Makeup Artist, as its new Chief Creative Director? Keep an eye out for this prestige line at CurliQue and a Signature Series event with the absolutely fab Ms. Lobell. (Wonder if she will bring her Top Gun/ER hubby Anthony Edwards along for a visit?)
And Bumble & bumble. B&B University + Blanche Macdonald = World Domination of Hair.
Let’s not forget our whole Hollywood North connection and the proliferation of Blanche Macdonald grads with IATSE local 891, ACFC and beyond. Yes. We will also carry Film, TV and FX products for all your gooey gore.
Uptown, we have City Square. Downtown, there’s Robson. Now Midtown, we will have our new Atelier Campus and its stores. As for the next incarnation, rumour has it that things could be blowing East. Hogtown? Now, we’ll have to come up with a better name than that!
In the meantime, check out the rest of the temporary window wraps going up at Robson and Homer! Makeup created by our own BMC Makeup luminary, Timothy Hung.
Before: a glossy new building on the corner of Robson and Homer in need of some love.
Installing the first of the window wraps!

The Blanche Macdonald Atelier Campus is almost all wrapped up.
No peeking until late summer/early fall!

Take us back to the days we’ve never lived…
April 28th, 2011 / Posted by natashaI spent the day at a creative photo shoot hanging out with a few of Blanche Macdonald’s most creative minds including Artistic Director, Photographer, Stylist and BMC Fashion Instructor Tyler Udall and Makeup Pro and BMC Instructor Jon Hennessey. Being a late 60′s/early 70′s-inspired photo shoot, it was awesome watching the collaboration and seeing how these pros put their twist on a decade we never lived or were too young to remember. We shot at the Waldorf Hotel, which is decked out in Teak wood, palm trees, random Tiki art, 1960′s wallpaper and shag carpet – a pretty perfect place for the shoot in a quirky sort of way.
This is Alicia, our model for the shoot.

Tyler was artistically inspired by the incredible American Photographer Stephen Shore and the constructed angular pieces of the late 60′s by Fashion Designer and legend, Pierre Cardin. When young Alicia arrived, he quickly adapted to her young and sweet appearance, keeping with the colour scheme and softness of textures explored. The concept transformed, in Tyler’s words, to “an early 70′s disgruntled pre-teen on holiday with her parents and not wanting to be there”, which you can totally imagine when you see these final shots!
Take a look at the series of behind-the-scenes pics along with the final, developed photos!
BMC Celebrates with Chanel and Meets Rag & Bone
April 14th, 2011 / Posted by natashaOn Tuesday night, Blanche Macdonald’s very own Retail Queen and Makeup Career Director JenD and super fabulous Executive Program Director Debbie kissed and hugged their way through the crowd of old friends and familiar faces at the Grand Opening of the gorgeous new Chanel Fragrance and Beauty Space at The Bay Downtown! There’s JenD with members from Chanel’s National Makeup Artist Team Gerald (top middle) and Makeup grad Breanne (3rd row left), Debbie with BMC’s amazing Esthetics grad Anu Varma who has worked at Chanel for 9 years (2nd row right) and The Bay’s General Manager Dana Hall (bottom left), our mind-blowing Makeup grad Tim Hung (2nd row left) with Chanel’s Counter Manager Carol, and the pretty Events Coordinator Kiran Kharia and The Bay’s Assistant General Manager Karen Skogland.

Right after, JenD and Debbie hit up the Rag & Bone party at Holts where they got to meet designers Marcus Wainwright (Rag, left) & David Neville (Bone, right)! With cocktails in hand, they shopped the Rag & Bone S/S ’11 collection, caught up with Holts managers (JenD’s old coworkers) and Blanche Macdonald interns, students and grads and hung out with the beautiful Meena – host of FMA Entertainment Weekly who is wearing a Rag & Bone dress (2nd and 3rd row middle)! Plus, aww – JenD got a peck from Fashion Merchandising grad and hot local blogger Peter (AKA The Starving Stylist). Love!
Always fun in the company of such passionate and lovely friends. Thanks for the photos JenD and Josh!

25 Snapshots from London Fashion Week
March 18th, 2011 / Posted by natashaThanks to our beautiful Makeup grad and instructor, Leah Elliston, we’ve been given a little peek into the FW/11 London Fashion Week!

That’s Leah standing in Piccadilly Circus where she took these great shots of the 2011 Burberry Prorsum Live Stream on the big screen. Loooove the coats and silhouettes! Leah’s fierce sense of style and expansive knowledge of the latest makeup techniques, trends and products (which she shares as co-editor of blog Smudge Style) earned her a press pass for Fashion Week. She joined the rest of the world’s fashion force of designers, editors, buyers, socialites and industry pros in London’s spectacular and historic Somerset House, which is where she perused and took the following shots of the fresh, fall collections of over 150 brands in a close-enough-to-touch sort of way.
You can see the handcrafted gun-metal accessories from Fannie Schiavoni, the artfully constructed multi-coloured layered gowns from Felicity Brown, a silver and gold striped dress by Craig Lawrence and a fun sequinned vision from Holly Fulton. There’s also an eye-catching scarf installation, a pearly white number by David Koma and a super cool display of Chunwei Liao’s popular PAPERSELF cut-paper eyelashes! Leah even wrote a quick blog post from the exclusive desks of the Somerset House’s press office. Take a look! Click to see full story »
Empire State of Mind
March 9th, 2011 / Posted by natashaWhile the rest of us wish we could have visited NYC for Fashion Week, we’ll just have to live vicariously through the photos of those lucky enough to have been there in person. Fortunately, a few Blanche Macdonald grads and instructors were able to take a few bites from the Big Apple and they’ve been kind enough to share some fun pics to satisfy our travel cravings!
Remember our incredibly talented makeup grads Sladja Markovic and Sherry Chen who battled it out back in November and became the only Canadian official 2011 Sephora PRO Beauty Artists? Well, they’ve been jetting in and out of Canada ever since! Amongst the whirlwind of fun and excitement, these beauty experts bundled up and showcased their talents at New York Fashion Week!! But, of course, not without a little bit of sight seeing, shopping and great eats. One of the judges from the competition, Beauty Editor Emily Dougherty of ELLE Magazine, even invited the Sephora Pros to tour ELLE’s headquarters, which included a visit to their “beauty closet” which pretty much consisted of jaw-dropping wall to wall shelves of the latest beauty products. If two Sephora Pros were in awe, how amazing must it be for the rest of us?

In between, the Pro team trained at the LVMH Headquarters and learned how to mix mediums at the Make Up For Ever Academy. Fun stuff. Extending the eyebrows in both directions (as you can see in the bottom right beauty shot) is one of the next trends in the makeup scene. And as for NYFW, our girls were in arms reach of many celebs and had an amazing time hanging out and working with their Sephora PRO team members backstage for the Edun, Charlotte Ronson, Dennis Basso and Cynthia Steffe runways!
Plus, Blanche Macdonald’s Esthetics Goddess, Barb B, won a trip to New York City (lucky lady!!!) and took our brilliant Fashion Queen Peggy with her! For walking fashion encyclopedias like Peggy, no trip to NYC could be complete without hitting up some the shops of some of the world’s most respected fashion labels. Gotta love how fun they are! Bright, whimsical balloons at Lanvin, tons of hearts on the doors and light fixtures of Moschino (feel the love!), gorgeous flower headed mannequins at Stella McCartney (the dark purple one is Iris!), a fun red stairway right next to the Opening Ceremony shop (which is probably the most welcoming flight of steps ever!) and butterflies at McQueen’s! It’s Zombie Fever with Howard Berger!
March 3rd, 2011 / Posted by natashaAcademy Award-winning Makeup Master, Howard Berger, dropped by our Uptown Campus a couple weeks ago to visit and demo some quick blood work. We fell in love with his hilarious stories and overall awesomeness. So we brought him back for a couple of full-fledged presentations! Not only did all makeup students have the opportunity to observe Howard’s fantastic Zombie demos on Monday, a day later, 18 Blanche Macdonald students and grads who were hungry for more signed up for a full day of advanced special FX personal training with him!
Those students received one-on-one instruction to help create their choice of casualty characters or the living dead, along with tips on making it in the industry, blood work and colouration. And as Howard is the co-owner of KNB EFX Group, Inc, one of Hollywood’s busiest special makeup effects studios, he brought in a bunch of KNB 3D Transfers in giant pizza boxes for the students to create all the bloody wounds they wished. Take a look at some of the pics we took from the workshop!
