A ‘Very Classy’ Champagne Toast to Derek Blasberg

February 10th, 2012 / Posted by natasha

When he’s not being the Editor at Large for Harper’s Bazaar, globe trotting, lunching with the likes of model Anja Rubik and attending soirees and shows thrown by some of the biggest names in Fashion, New York based Fashion writer Derek Blasberg has found the time to go on a world-wide book tour… and a very classy one at that!

The Bay hosted this swanky little event in their sleek, high-end designer section, The Room, to toast the launch of Derek’s latest book – a cheekily-written New York Times bestseller titled Very Classy: Even More Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady. Having had contributed to Vogue, Style.com, W, and Elle and with years of experience partying uptown and downtown, mingling with the fashion and social elite from near and far, Derek is an expert on perfect social behaviour in every social situation. That’s why his etiquette tip-filled book, Very Classy, is one to be excited about.

Gathered amongst all the Erdem, Proenza Schouler and Mugler were Vancouver’s fiercest Fashion stars, including Blanche Macdonald Fashion staffers and grads and, notably, the guest of honour’s stunning DJ/Model friend Leigh Lezark. Everyone left the party with books signed by Derek (who, btw, seems to also have a special talent in remembering everyone’s names), while Team Blanche (our Fashion students) worked the room and male Liz Bell models served up a choice of oversized classy/trashy pins and champagne and wine for everyone.

That’s pure class in our books!

Thanks to Fashion instructor/grad Lyndi Barrett of Lj PR & our very own Shaina Azad for the party pics!

Follow him and his life on Twitter @DerekBlasberg. He’s hilarious. You won’t regret it.

Mercedes-Benz StartUp Semi-Finals

Well, the Twittersphere was buzzing with enthusiasm Tuesday night. When Mercedes-Benz teams up with IMG – an international mega PR company to host a competition and mentorship program to nurture emerging Canadian Fashion Designers, it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Along with major exposure, contestants of the Mercedes-Benz StartUp Competition are given a chance to access help from incredibly experienced Fashion insiders and are given an amazing opportunity to debut their collection at LG Fashion Week in Toronto!

The criteria for entry for Canadian designers is having less than five years of experience and having produced at least one commercial collection.

“The heart of the program is about connecting a select group of designers with an experienced panel of industry insiders to help them navigate real world challenges both on and off the runway while building a sustainable business beyond the initial launch of their collection,” says Jarrad Clark, Global Production Director at IMG. (VanSun)

One of the top twenty designers selected from the hundreds that entered is Blanche Macdonald Fashion Design program graduate, Shelley Ediger. Shelley soon earned her coveted spot in the top ten (five in Montreal and five in Vancouver) following a one-on-one interview in front of a panel of judges (all key influencers in Canada’s Fashion Industry), giving them a closeup on her swim collection and convincing them she has what it takes to succeed.

Next thing she knew, she was selecting eight ensembles from her label, Shelley Ediger Swim, to showcase on the catwalk for the Western semi-finals!

Sponsored by FASHION Mag, Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC), Mercedes-Benz Canada and IMG, we arrived with high expectations: all of which were met as we were greeted by valet parking, signature Lemon Drop Martinis and wine, endless hors d’oeuvres, and a well-heeled crowd (and, of course, plenty of beautiful vehicles), all within the airy and well-lit showroom of Mercedes-Benz North Vancouver.

Amongst the crowd was the judging panel consisting of industry insiders Yumi Eto (Aritzia’s Design director, journalist and designer whose designs are sold in many high end department stores and boutiques worldwide), Joy Pecknold (Western Editor of FASHION Mag), Catherine Dunwoody (A-list Stylist, Fashion Editor), Michael Minielly (Supervisor, PR, Mercedes-Benz Canada) and Amy Wasserman (IMG, Vice Prez of The Fashion Event Corporation).

Backstage, handfuls of Blanche Macdonald Makeup and Pro Hair students worked hard to get the models runway-ready. The show was fantastic – an outstanding way to showcase the next generation of designers of Canada!

So proud of your accomplishments, Shelley!! Here’s to Canadian fashion design talent and amping up Canada’s fashion position on the global scale!

Supermodel David Chiang Brings The Runway to Blanche Macdonald

June 23rd, 2011 / Posted by natasha

At Blanche Macdonald, we’re always proud of how our Fashion grads make their mark across the Fashion World.  For Fashion Merchandising grad David Chiang, his mark is being seen by millions every day.  It’s been four years since he left BMC and in that time, he has become one of the top male models in the world.

Between castings in Europe and right before he left to walk for Milan Fashion Week, this busy supermodel brought his gorgeous 6’2, fast-food loving, outspoken, good-humoured and loveable self (head to toe in his signature shades of black) to our Downtown Campus to catch up with the fabulous ladies in our Fashion Department and to hang out with one lucky Fashion Merchandising class.

Here he is with some of our amazing Fashion staffers Donna, Peggy and Mel!

David exploded into the Fashion Scene after his debut in Fall 2010.  His stunning looks quickly made him a favourite for the international runway: Rick Owens, Paul Smith, Ermenegildo Zegna, Missoni, Richard Chai, Diesel, rag and bone among many others… and even as an exclusive for Dior Homme. He’s also the first Asian model to ever walk for Emporio Armani. His all time fave show? Alexander McQueen’s final Menswear Fall 2010 where McQueen personally asked David to stay for fittings.
(L-R) Alexander McQueen Fall 2010, Diesel Black Gold Fall 2011, John Varvatos Spring 2012 in Key Outfit.

David’s dream is to walk the catwalk with wings on. Victoria’s Secret wings. Specifically, Tyra’s wings. Given the whole gender-bending model trend going on, this just might happen. David’s androgynous looks, and those of his fellow model and bestie, Andrej Pejic, have made them two of the most recognized faces that currently defy the norms in the modelling industry. While we may have to squint our eyes and lean closer to he monitor to see how his handsome features work as a woman, some of the world’s most iconic designers were quick to take note. Even Karl Lagerfeld told David that he was a “very beautiful Chinese girl”!(L-R) Yohji Yamamoto Spring 2012, Dior Homme Fall 2011 Exclusive, Emporio Armani Fall 2010

Read more about David Chiang in his interview with The New York Times’ Fashion blog, The Cut.

Hey Fashion, Makeup & Hair students and grads – recognize these industry pros?

And for more eye candy… the models. These photos are from David’s “David Loves…” Facebook Album. Check out those cheekbones!

It’s times like this when we take a second to breathe from our busy, exciting lives to remember just how many of the people who have crossed our path have had the honour to meet, mingle and work with so many of the top actors, musicians, models and industry pros, that we are reminded of how small the world really is.

Six degrees of separation? How about one. If Karl Lagerfeld had his own Facebook, he’d probably be showing up on our “suggested friends” list right about now…

BMC Celebrates with Chanel and Meets Rag & Bone

April 14th, 2011 / Posted by natasha

On Tuesday night, Blanche Macdonald’s very own Retail Queen and Makeup Career Director JenD and super fabulous Executive Program Director Debbie kissed and hugged their way through the crowd of old friends and familiar faces at the Grand Opening of the gorgeous new Chanel Fragrance and Beauty Space at The Bay Downtown!  There’s JenD with members from Chanel’s National Makeup Artist Team Gerald (top middle) and Makeup grad Breanne (3rd row left), Debbie with BMC’s amazing Esthetics grad Anu Varma who has worked at Chanel for 9 years (2nd row right) and The Bay’s General Manager Dana Hall (bottom left), our mind-blowing Makeup grad Tim Hung (2nd row left) with Chanel’s Counter Manager Carol, and the pretty Events Coordinator Kiran Kharia and The Bay’s Assistant General Manager Karen Skogland.

Right after, JenD and Debbie hit up the Rag & Bone party at Holts where they got to meet designers Marcus Wainwright (Rag, left) & David Neville (Bone, right)! With cocktails in hand, they shopped the Rag & Bone S/S ’11 collection, caught up with Holts managers (JenD’s old coworkers) and Blanche Macdonald interns, students and grads and hung out with the beautiful Meena – host of FMA Entertainment Weekly who is wearing a Rag & Bone dress (2nd and 3rd row middle)! Plus, aww – JenD got a peck from Fashion Merchandising grad and hot local blogger Peter (AKA The Starving Stylist). Love!
Always fun in the company of such passionate and lovely friends. Thanks for the photos JenD and Josh!

10th Anniversary of DACE Clothing

February 25th, 2011 / Posted by natasha

Last night marked the 10th anniversary celebration and Spring/Summer 2011 collection preview of  d a c e clothing!

Dace Moore, BMC Fashion Design grad and the eponymous mind behind the label, held a great party at Opus Bar in Yaletown filled with fabulous company, delicious snacks and a drool-worthy fashion presentation. We couldn’t be more proud.

We’re not the only ones blown away by d a c e. Since Dace launched her line back in ’02, the brand has constantly been on the local and international fashion radar.

When Dace (the designer) was featured on the Today Show, Susie Wall declared d a c e (the label) the “fashion landmark for all things cool”. Front Row Mag.com identifies d a c e as “Canadian Fashion’s best kept secret”. Refinery 29 fell head over heels over the brand’s S/S11 collection, and according to fashionista.com, d a c e is one of nine obsession-worthy Canadian labels right up there with Obakki and Mackage. We agree!  Regularly featured in magazines such as *tlc, LOULOU, String, Montecristo, TV Week Mag and Flare, worn by celebrities, sold across Canada, the US, and even as far as Australia and Singapore, Dace Moore has plenty to celebrate.

I walked through the hotel doors in a thick, winter coat, very much aware that we Vancouverites are weeks away from breaking out our spring wardrobe.  However, all winter thoughts vanished moments after arriving. A handful of fresh-faced models from Lizbell Agency swiftly paraded in and out of the crowd in threes and hung out in front of a white backdrop for us to snap away.  Their clothes evoked a certain polished effortlessness with an intimate and clean aesthetic that’s very chicly West Coast and very d a c e.
